About this tool
This calculator finds how many units you must sell to cover fixed costs, and how many more you need to hit a profit target. It computes contribution per unit and contribution margin, converts unit targets into revenue, and — given your conversion rate — into the number of leads or visitors required. A scenario table tests price, variable cost, and fixed cost changes, with a CSV export.
How to use
- Enter your monthly or project Fixed costs.
- Set the Price per unit and Variable cost per unit.
- Add a Target profit and your sales Conversion rate % to translate units into leads.
- Review break-even units, target units, revenue needed, and leads needed, then use Download break-even CSV for the scenarios.
Frequently asked questions
What formula determines break-even units?
Fixed costs divided by contribution per unit (price minus variable cost), rounded up to a whole unit. Target units use the same formula with the target profit added to fixed costs.
What is contribution margin?
The contribution per unit expressed as a percentage of price — the share of each sale left over to cover fixed costs after variable costs. A $50 price with $20 variable cost has a 60% contribution margin.
How are leads needed calculated?
Target units divided by your conversion rate, rounded up. At a 3% conversion rate, selling 250 units requires about 8,334 leads.
Why does the tool reject my inputs?
Price must be greater than zero and greater than the variable cost — if every sale loses money on variable costs alone, no volume can break even.
What do the scenario rows test?
Your baseline against price up 10%, variable cost up 10%, and fixed costs down 10%, showing how sensitive your break-even point is to each lever.
Is my cost data uploaded?
No — everything runs client-side in your browser, and these figures are planning estimates rather than accounting or financial advice.
