About this tool
This tip calculator goes beyond a flat percentage: it handles tax, an existing service charge, tipping on the pre-tax or post-tax amount, per-person splitting, and rounding the final total up or to the nearest dollar. A comparison table shows the bill at 15%, 18%, 20%, and 25% tips, and you can download the scenarios as a CSV.
How to use
- Enter the Bill amount and your Tip % (before tax and tip).
- Set People to split the total, and enter the local Tax % plus any Service charge % already on the bill.
- Choose a Tip base (Pre-tax or Post-tax) and an optional Round total mode.
- Read the tip, total, and per-person amounts, then use Download tip scenarios CSV to compare tip rates.
Frequently asked questions
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Convention in the US is pre-tax, which is the default here, but some people tip on the final total — switching Tip base to Post-tax computes the tip on the bill plus tax so you can see both.
How does rounding work?
"Round up" raises the grand total to the next whole dollar and "Nearest dollar" rounds either way; the difference is shown as a rounding adjustment so you know exactly how much the rounding added or removed.
How is the per-person amount computed?
The rounded grand total — bill, tax, service charge, and tip — is divided evenly by the number of people. The tool splits everything equally rather than itemizing by person.
What if the bill already includes a service charge?
Enter it as the Service charge %. It is added to the total separately from the tip, so you can decide whether an additional tip is warranted on top.
